Overview

Nihongomachi is a free, client-side Japanese study tool. We are committed to being transparent about the minimal data we handle. This policy explains what is collected, how it is used, and your rights as a user.

Data stored on your device

All study progress — XP, streaks, vocabulary and kanji history, quiz results, and settings — is saved exclusively in your browser's localStorage under the key nihongomachi_state. This data never leaves your device unless you choose to sign in (see Cloud Sync below). You can clear it at any time from the Settings page or by clearing your browser storage.

Cloud sync (optional)

If you sign in with Google, your progress is synced to a secure database so you can continue across devices. We store only your study state (XP, progress, settings) and your Google account ID. We do not store your name, email address, or any other personal information beyond what is needed to identify your account. You can sign out and delete your synced data at any time from the Settings page.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics on our public marketing pages (nihongomachi.com, /blog, /about, /contact, /privacy) to understand how visitors find and use the site. This includes standard metrics such as page views, referral sources, and device type. Analytics is not loaded inside the study app itself (/app). You can opt out using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or any standard ad/tracker blocker.

Cookies

We do not set any first-party cookies. Google Analytics may set cookies as described in Google's own privacy policy. No cookies are used for advertising or cross-site tracking by us.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party services:

• Google Analytics — page view analytics on public pages

• Google OAuth — optional sign-in for cloud sync

• Google Fonts — fonts loaded from Google's CDN on every page

Each service operates under its own privacy policy. We do not sell or share your data with any other third parties.

Children's privacy

Nihongomachi does not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page reflects when it was last revised. Continued use of Nihongomachi after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
