日本語町 · Nihongomachi

A Japanese town you study your way through

Nihongomachi is a free JLPT study site: every N5 word, kanji and grammar point, spaced-repetition reviews, and practice built around the real exam.

What's here

  • 814 N5 words, grouped by topic, with readings and audio.
  • 103 N5 kanji, with readings and the N5 words that use them.
  • 89 N5 grammar points, grouped by what they do.
  • A study app with flashcards and spaced-repetition reviews. Sign in with Google to sync progress between devices.

Where the content comes from

There has been no official JLPT word list since 2010, so we follow the lists most study sites use: the Tanos JLPT lists for vocabulary and kanji, and JLPT Sensei's N5 grammar list as a checklist. Kanji readings are checked against KANJIDIC. All explanations and examples are our own.

Found a mistake? Every word, kanji and grammar page has a "Report it" link, or use the contact page.

Practice and mock tests

Practice questions in the real exam formats, listening practice with audio, and timed mock tests scored against the real pass marks.

Who's behind it

I'm Kenneth, a software engineer in Brisbane, Australia. I've been hooked on Japan since I was a kid watching anime, and that grew into a love of the food and the history too. I've travelled through Japan many times, in lots of different cities, but I've never managed to speak fluently or get a proper qualification.

So I built Nihongomachi for myself first: a way to keep studying for the JLPT and track my progress around a busy schedule. If it helps you along the way too, even better.

You can find my other projects at kennethau.com.

Nihongomachi is independent and not affiliated with the Japan Foundation or JEES, who run the JLPT.
