  2. 2. Comparing how people do things

My older brother eats more than I do.

    • imouto wa watashi yori hayaku okimasu.

Nuance

Japanese adjectives have no special "more" form: 大きい means both "big" and "bigger" depending on より. The thing that has more of the quality comes first, before は. To ask which of two is more ~, use AとBとどちらが〜ですか. This pattern describes "more"; for "not as ~ as" you will learn ほど at N4.

Compared with

Same meaning, but the order is flipped and のほうが stresses A. It is the usual answer to a どちら question.

Use this to ask which of two things is more ~.

いちばん is for "the most" in a group of three or more. より compares two things.

Common mistakes

Wrong

Right

FAQ

How do I say "more" with an adjective in Japanese?

You don't change the adjective. より does the work: このかばんはあのかばんより高いです means "This bag is more expensive than that bag".

How do I ask which one is bigger?

Use AとBとどちらが大きいですか. The answer is usually Aのほうが大きいです.

Can I use より with verbs?

Yes. Put an adverb before the verb: あにはわたしよりたくさん食べます (My brother eats more than I do).
