Nuance

Choose the question word to match the group: 何 for things, だれ for people, どこ for places and いつ for times. The winner takes が, in both the question and the answer. の中で is for three or more items; for two, use 〜と〜とどちらが. You will often see the word written in kanji as 一番.

Compared with

どちら compares only two things. いちばん picks one from three or more.

のほうが says one of two is more ~. いちばん says one is the most ~ in a whole group.

FAQ

How do I say 'the most' or 'the best' in Japanese?

Put いちばん before the adjective: いちばん高い (the most expensive), いちばんすき (favourite). To name the group, add 〜の中で at the start.

When do I use の中で and when do I use 〜と〜とどちら?

Use 〜と〜とどちら for two things and の中で with いちばん for three or more. For example, ねこといぬとどちらがすきですか, but どうぶつの中で何がいちばんすきですか.
