Nuance

Remember the two shapes: に before なる for nouns and な-adjectives, く for い-adjectives. Watch out for きれい: it ends in い but is a な-adjective, so it is きれいになる. なる describes a change that happens; to say you choose or decide something, use にする.

Compared with

にする means you choose or make something so (コーヒーにします). になる means it changes or happens by itself.

The く form you use before なる is the same one you use in くない: さむくない, さむくなる.

な-adjectives drop な and take に before なる: しずかになる.

FAQ

Why is it よくなる and not いくなる?

いい is a casual form of an older word, よい, and all its changed forms use よ: よくない, よかった, よくなる. Only the plain form itself is usually いい.

What is the difference between になる and にする?

になる is about a change that happens: 先生になりました, 'I became a teacher.' にする is about a choice someone makes: コーヒーにします, 'I'll have coffee.'

Can I use なる for age and time?

Yes. 二十さいになりました means 'I turned twenty', and 九時になりました means 'It's now nine o'clock.'
