Nuance

Use とても with positive adjectives. For "not very", use あまり + negative (あまり高くないです). とても does not go directly before a noun or an ordinary verb: for "eat a lot" use たくさん. In casual speech people often say すごく instead.

Compared with

とても高い is just "very expensive"; 高すぎる means "too expensive", more than is good.

とても goes in front of all forms of an い-adjective, including the past: とてもたのしかったです.

Keep the な when a な-adjective describes a noun: とてもしずかなまち.
