〜が好きです

I like X

X がすきです means "I like X". すき (好き) is a な-adjective meaning "liked", so the thing you like is marked with が, not を.

How to make it

RuleExample
Noun + がすきです
Negative: すきじゃないです/すきではありません
Question: 〜がすきですか
Before a noun: すきな + noun

Meaning and examples

  1. 1. Saying what you like

Mark the thing you like with が. 大すき means you like it a lot.

    • nihongo ga suki desu.

      I like Japanese.

    • watashi wa neko ga daisuki desu.

      I love cats.

  2. 2. Saying what you don't like

Use the な-adjective negative すきじゃないです. With あまり it sounds softer: not very keen on.

    • yasai wa amari suki ja nai desu.

I'm not very keen on vegetables.

    • sakana wa suki de wa arimasen.

      I don't like fish.

  3. 3. Asking about likes

Add か to ask, often with どんな to ask what kind.

    • donna supootsu ga suki desu ka.

What kind of sports do you like?

    • yamakawa san wa koohii ga suki desu ka.

Do you like coffee, Mr Yamakawa?

  4. 4. Favourite things

すきな + noun means "favourite" or "the ~ you like".

    • suki na tabemono wa nan desu ka.

      What is your favourite food?

Nuance

In negative sentences, people often switch が to は (やさいはすきじゃないです) to contrast it with other things. きらいです (dislike) exists but sounds strong, so すきじゃないです is the polite choice. Saying すきです directly to a person can mean a romantic confession, so be careful.

Compared with

がすきです follows a noun. To like an activity, add の to a verb first: 読むのがすきです.

のほうがすきです compares two things and says which one you like more.

Both use が. ほしい means you want to have something, while すき means you like it.

FAQ

Why is it が and not を with すき?

すき is an adjective meaning "liked", not a verb. So 日本語がすきです is literally "Japanese is liked (by me)", and the subject takes が.

Does すきです mean "I love you"?

Said directly to a person, すきです is a common way to confess romantic feelings. About food, hobbies or places it just means you like them.
