  2. 2. Saying someone is bad at something

    • otouto wa kanji o kaku no ga heta desu.

My younger brother is bad at writing kanji.

  3. 3. Talking modestly about yourself

About yourself, people usually say 下手 or あまり上手じゃない. Saying you are 上手 sounds like boasting.

      I'm bad at swimming.

    • watashi wa hanasu no ga amari jouzu ja nai desu.

I'm not very good at speaking.

Nuance

上手 is a compliment for other people; about yourself it sounds boastful, so say 下手です or あまり上手じゃないです instead. When someone praises your Japanese, a natural reply is いいえ、まだまだです. The thing you are good at always takes が, never を.

Compared with

Same structure, different meaning: のがすき is about liking an activity, のが上手 is about doing it well.

上手 and 下手 take が for the skill, like すき and わかる. With a noun you drop の: りょうりが上手.

ことができる says you are able to do something at all. のが上手 says you do it well.

After a verb you need の: およぐのが上手. After a noun you don't: すいえいが上手 or りょうりが上手.

What should I say when someone says my Japanese is 上手?

A modest reply is natural: いいえ、まだまだです (No, I still have a long way to go). You can also simply say ありがとうございます.
