〜のが好きです

I like doing ~

〜のがすきです means "I like doing ~". The の turns a verb phrase into a noun, so it can be the thing you like (or dislike).

How to make it

Nuance

Use the dictionary form before の, not the ます form. The particle before すき is が, not を: 読むのがすきです. In a negative sentence or a contrast, が often changes to は: すきじゃないです becomes 〜のはすきじゃないです. For a single thing (a noun) you don't need の: おんがくがすきです.

Compared with

Noun + がすきです is for liking a thing. 〜のがすきです is for liking an activity, using a verb.

のがじょうずです talks about being good at doing something, not liking it.

たい is wanting to do something now or in the future. のがすきです is a general liking.

FAQ

Why is it のが and not のを?

すき is an adjective, not a verb, so the thing you like is marked with が. Many learners say を because of English "like", but が is correct.

What is the difference between のがすき and ことがすき?

Both mean "like doing" and often swap freely. At N5, 〜のがすきです is the common pattern to learn first.

How do I say I love doing something?

Use 大すき: 本を読むのが大すきです (I love reading).
