Nuance
たい is for your own wishes, or for asking the listener. For other people, you cannot simply say 母は行きたいです; report it instead (行きたいと言っています). Asking a teacher or boss 〜たいですか can sound too direct, so offer or invite with 〜ませんか. The object can take が or を: 水が飲みたい and 水を飲みたい are both fine.

Common mistakes
Wrong日本に行くたいです。
Right日本に行きたいです。
たい attaches to the ます-stem, not the dictionary form.
Wrong母は日本へ行きたいです。
Right母は日本へ行きたいと言っています。
You can't state another person's wish directly with たいです; report what they said.
Wrong日本に行きたいでした。
Right日本に行きたかったです。
たい conjugates like an い-adjective, so its past is たかったです, not たいでした.
Practice
JLPT style: choose the best answer for ( ).
-
1わたしは日本へ( )たいです。
たい attaches to the ます-stem, so 行き + たい. The dictionary, て and た forms don't connect to たい.
-
2「何が( )ですか。」「すしが食べたいです。」
The answer uses 食べたい, so the question asks 何が食べたいですか. The other forms do not fit before ですか here.
-
3今日はつかれましたから、どこへも( )。
どこへも needs a negative verb, and being tired gives the reason: 行きたくないです.
-
4子どものとき、先生に( )です。
子どものとき puts the wish in the past, so use なりたかったです. なったです is not correct Japanese.
FAQ
Should I use が or を with たい?
Both are correct. 水が飲みたい and 水を飲みたい mean the same thing; が can sound a little more emotional and is common with short sentences.
What is the difference between たい and ほしい?
たい follows a verb and means "want to do". ほしい follows a noun with が and means "want (a thing)": カメラがほしいです.
Can I say what someone else wants with たい?
Not directly in a statement. Report it instead, for example 友だちは行きたいと言っています. At N4 you will also learn たがっています.
