  2. 2. Asking what someone wants

What do you want for your birthday?

    • donna kaban ga hoshii desu ka.

What kind of bag do you want?

  3. 3. What you don't want or wanted before

ほしい is an い-adjective, so it has negative and past forms like ほしくない and ほしかった.

    • ima wa nani mo hoshiku nai desu.

I don't want anything right now.

    • kodomo no toki, neko ga hoshikatta desu.

      When I was a child, I wanted a cat.

Nuance

ほしい describes your own feeling, so ○○さんはほしいです about another person sounds wrong; you will learn ほしがっています later. In a shop or restaurant, ask with ください, not ほしいです. Asking a teacher or boss 何がほしいですか is too direct.

Compared with

たい is for wanting to do an action (行きたい); ほしい is for wanting a thing (車がほしい).

ください is a request to someone (水をください); ほしいです just states your wish.

Both take が. すき is liking something; ほしい is wanting to have it.

FAQ

What is the difference between ほしい and たい?

ほしい is for things: 車がほしい (I want a car). たい is for actions: 車を買いたい (I want to buy a car).

Can I say ほしいです to order food?

It is better to use ください or おねがいします: コーヒーをください. ほしいです sounds like you are talking about your wishes, not making a request.

How do I say someone else wants something?

ほしい is for your own feelings. For other people Japanese uses ほしがっています, which is N4 grammar. At N5 you can ask the person directly instead.
