Nuance

ましょう assumes the other person will join, so it can feel pushy when you first invite someone, especially a senior. To invite politely, ask 〜ませんか first, and use ましょう once they agree. To offer help ('Shall I ~?'), use ましょうか.

Compared with

ませんか asks if the person would like to do something and leaves room to say no. ましょう is a direct 'Let's'.

ましょうか means 'Shall we ~?' or 'Shall I ~?'. It asks; ましょう proposes.

Common mistakes

Wrong

Right

ましょう attaches to the ます-stem, not the dictionary form.

Wrong

Right

For group 2 verbs, the stem is just 食べ; there is no extra り.

Wrong

Right

ましょう suggests doing something now or later, so it can't go with a past time like きのう.

Practice

JLPT style: choose the best answer for ( ).

FAQ

What is the difference between ましょう and ませんか?

ませんか is an invitation: 'Won't you ~?' It lets the other person decide. ましょう is a suggestion that assumes they agree, so it is often used as the reply: 行きませんか → ええ、行きましょう.

Can I use ましょう with my boss or teacher?

It's fine once you have both agreed on a plan. For the first invitation, ませんか sounds more polite.

What is the casual form of ましょう?

The volitional form: 行こう, 食べよう, しよう. Friends use it to say 'Let's ~'.
