Nuance

ほうがいい is fairly strong advice, so adding よ makes it sound friendly and caring. Avoid giving this kind of advice to teachers or bosses; make a polite request instead. For negative advice, use the present ない-form, never なかった. The dictionary form + ほうがいい also exists, but the た-form is more common for specific advice.

Compared with

ほう also appears in comparisons ("B is more ~ than A"). In ほうがいい advice, ほう follows a verb directly with no の.

〜なくてはいけない is an obligation ("must"). ほうがいい is advice ("it would be better to").

Common mistakes

Wrong

Right

For advice, the verb (usually た-form) connects straight to ほう with no の.

Wrong

Right

Negative advice uses the present ない-form, not the past.

Wrong

Right

The た-form of 行く is irregular: 行った, so the advice is 行ったほうがいい.

Practice

JLPT style: choose the best answer for ( ).

FAQ

Why does ほうがいい use the past tense?

The た-form here does not mean past. It makes the advice sound specific and firm. You may also hear the dictionary form, but た-form is the usual choice.

How do I say "you shouldn't"?

Use the ない-form + ほうがいい: 行かないほうがいいです (You'd better not go). Don't use the past なかった.

Is ほうがいい rude?

It isn't rude with friends, family or people at your level, especially with よ. With teachers or bosses it can sound like you are telling them what to do, so use a polite request.
