〜に行く(目的)

Go to do ~ / Go for the purpose of ~

Verb ます-stem + に行く means "go to do ~". に shows the purpose of going, and the same pattern works with 来る (come to do) and かえる (go home to do).

Meaning and examples

  1. 1. Going somewhere to do something

The verb before に is the reason you go. The place can come first with へ or に.

    • eiga o mi ni ikimasu.

I'm going to see a movie.

    • depaato e kaimono ni ikimashita.

I went shopping at a department store.

    • tomodachi to kouen e asobi ni ikimashita.

I went to the park with a friend to play.

    • haha wa suupaa e sakana o kai ni ikimashita.

My mother went to the supermarket to buy fish.

    • nihon e nihongo o benkyou shi ni ikitai desu.

I want to go to Japan to study Japanese.

  2. 2. Coming to do something

With 来る, it means someone comes (to you) for a purpose.

    • ashita, tomodachi ga uchi e asobi ni kimasu.

A friend is coming over to my place tomorrow.

  3. 3. Inviting someone

With 〜ませんか, it invites someone to go and do something together.

    • issho ni gohan o tabe ni ikimasen ka.

Would you like to go and eat together?

Nuance

Only verbs of movement (行く, 来る, かえる) follow this に. The object of the purpose verb keeps its を: えいがを見に行きます. With する nouns such as かいもの or さんぽ, you can drop する and say かいものに行きます.

Compared with

In 学校に行く, に follows a place. In 見に行く, に follows a verb stem and shows why you go.

〜たい says you want to do something. You can combine them: 見に行きたいです (I want to go and see).

This page is the purpose use of に. The same particle also marks time and destination.

Common mistakes

Wrong

Right

に attaches to the ます-stem (見), not the dictionary form.

Wrong

Right

The thing you go to see is the object of 見る, so it keeps を.

Wrong

Right

会う marks the person with に, and that particle stays the same inside the purpose pattern.

Practice

JLPT style: choose the best answer for ( ).

FAQ

What is the difference between 買いに行く and 買って行く?

買いに行く means you go somewhere in order to buy. 買って行く means you buy something first and then go, often taking it with you.

Can I use this pattern with any verb?

The first verb can be almost any action verb, but the last verb must be a movement verb such as 行く, 来る or かえる.
