〜に行く

Go to (destination)

Place + に + 行く means "go to (a place)". The particle に marks the destination, and the same pattern works with 来る (come) and かえる (go back home).

How to make it

RuleExample
Place + に + 行きます
Place + へ + 行きます (same meaning)
Place + に + 来ます/かえります
Question: どこに行きますか

Meaning and examples

  1. 1. Going to a place

に marks where you go. It is used with 行く for trips, school, work and shops.

    • mainichi gakkou ni ikimasu.

I go to school every day.

    • ashita, doko ni ikimasu ka.

      Where are you going tomorrow?

    • rainen, nihon ni ikitai desu.

I want to go to Japan next year.

    • kinou, depaato ni ikimashita.

I went to a department store yesterday.

  2. 2. Coming and going home

The same に works with 来る (come) and かえる (return home).

    • tomodachi ga uchi ni kimashita.

A friend came to my house.

    • rokuji ni uchi ni kaerimasu.

      I'll go home at six.

  3. 3. Using へ for direction

へ can replace に with verbs of moving. It is read え and sounds a little more like "towards".

    • chichi wa gaikoku e ikimashita.

      My father went abroad.

Nuance

に and へ are both correct with 行く, 来る and かえる, and in daily speech に is more common. Do not use を or で for the destination. When you go back to your own home, country or office, use かえる instead of 行く.

Compared with

Here に follows a place (学校に行く). In the purpose pattern, に follows a verb stem and shows why you go (見に行く).

で marks where an action happens (学校でべんきょうする), not where you are going.

に has several jobs. With 行く and 来る it shows the destination, which is the use on this page.

FAQ

What is the difference between に and へ with 行く?

Both are correct. に focuses on the arrival point and is more common in speech. へ focuses on the direction and is often seen in writing.

Why can't I use を with 行く?

を with verbs of moving marks the place you pass through (こうえんをあるく), not the place you arrive at. For the destination use に or へ.
