〜で〜

At / in (place of action)

The particle で marks the place where an action happens: "at" or "in". Put it after a place word when someone does something there.

How to make it

RuleExample
Place + で + action verb
Place + で + event + があります
どこ + で + action verb (question)

Meaning and examples

  1. 1. Where an action happens

With action verbs such as 食べる, 買う, 会う and べんきょうする, the place takes で.

    • toshokan de benkyou shimasu.

      I study at the library.

    • mainichi, gakkou de hirugohan o tabemasu.

I eat lunch at school every day.

    • eki no mae de tomodachi ni aimashita.

I met a friend in front of the station.

    • depaato de kutsu o kaimashita.

I bought shoes at the department store.

  2. 2. Where an event takes place

Events like parties, tests and meetings take で even with あります, because something happens there.

    • paatii wa yamada san no uchi de arimasu.

The party is at the Yamadas' house.

    • ashita, daigaku de tesuto ga arimasu.

There is a test at the university tomorrow.

  3. 3. Asking where someone does something

Use どこで to ask where an action happens or happened.

    • sono shatsu wa doko de kaimashita ka.

Where did you buy that shirt?

Nuance

Ask yourself: is someone doing something in that place? If yes, use で. If you only say where a person or thing is, use に with いる or ある (へやにいます). The one tricky case is events: パーティーがあります takes で because the party happens there.

Compared with

に marks where something exists (いる/ある) or a destination. で marks where an action is done.

The same particle で can also mean "by" or "with" (バスで, はしで). Here it marks a place.

This pattern says what is in a place and always uses に, never で.

FAQ

When do I use で and when do I use に for places?

Use で for where an action happens (駅で会う). Use に for where something exists (駅にいる) or where you go (駅に行く).

Why is it パーティーはうちであります and not うちにあります?

A party is an event, and events happen in a place, so they take で. Objects that just sit somewhere take に: 本はつくえの上にあります.
