Meaning and examples

  1. 1. Adding another point

そして adds a second fact or quality, like 'and also'.

    • kono mise wa yasui desu. soshite, oishii desu.

This shop is cheap. And it's good too.

    • yamashita san wa yasashii desu. soshite, omoshiroi desu.

Mr Yamashita is kind. He's also funny.

  2. 2. What happened next

それから shows the next event in time. そして can also do this, but それから makes the order clearer.

    • asagohan o tabemashita. sorekara, gakkou e ikimashita.

I ate breakfast. After that, I went to school.

    • shukudai o shimasu. sorekara, terebi o mimasu.

I'll do my homework. After that, I'll watch TV.

    • eki de tomodachi ni aimashita. soshite, issho ni eiga o mimashita.

I met a friend at the station. Then we watched a film together.

  3. 3. Adding one more item

それから can add something to a list or order, like 'oh, and also'.

    • pan to tamago, sorekara gyuunyuu o kaimashita.

I bought bread, eggs, and also milk.

    • koohii o kudasai. sorekara, keeki mo.

A coffee, please. Oh, and some cake too.

Nuance

Both words usually start a new sentence and are followed by a comma. To join two verbs inside one sentence, use the て-form instead. それから is very common in speech when you remember one more thing to add. Don't use そして to join two nouns: say パンとたまご, not パンそしてたまご.

Compared with

The て-form joins actions inside one sentence (食べて、ねました). そして and それから start a new sentence.

てから is attached to a verb and stresses 'after doing'. それから means the same idea but starts a new sentence.

でも and しかし show contrast ('but'). そして adds a point in the same direction.
