Nuance

ないでください is polite but still a direct request, so with someone senior you can soften it with すみませんが first. Friends and family drop ください and just say 〜ないで. Note the group 1 verbs that end in う change to わ: かう → かわない, すう → すわない. On signs you may also see stronger forms like 〜てはいけません.

Compared with

てください asks someone to do something. ないでください asks them not to do it.

てはいけません states a rule (you must not) and sounds stronger. ないでください is a polite request.

なくてもいいです means "you don't have to". ないでください means "please don't".

FAQ

How do I say "please don't" in Japanese?

Put the verb in the ない-form and add でください: 行かないでください (please don't go), 見ないでください (please don't look).

What is the casual way to say ないでください?

Just drop ください: 行かないで, 見ないで. You use this with friends and family.

Is ないでください rude?

No, it is polite, but it is still a direct request. Adding すみませんが at the start makes it softer, which is good with teachers or strangers.
