Nuance

This is the natural 'no' answer to a なければなりませんか question: いいえ、〜なくてもいいです. It does not mean 'must not'; for that, use てはいけません. With friends, drop です: 来なくてもいいよ.

Compared with

なければなりません means 'must do'. なくてもいいです is its opposite: 'don't have to'.

てはいけません means 'must not do'. なくてもいいです just says doing it isn't needed.

てもいいですか asks permission to do something. なくてもいいですか asks permission not to do it.
