Nuance

Because 〜かた makes a noun, anything that was the object of the verb links with の, not を: かんじの読みかた. Words like 読みかた and つかいかた are so common that they work like single words. The kanji is 方, the same character as in この方 (this person), but the meaning is different.

Compared with

どうやって asks "how" in a whole sentence (どうやって行きますか). 〜かた makes a noun you can use with を or が (行きかたをおしえてください).

ことができる talks about whether you can do something. 〜かた talks about the method of doing it.

FAQ

How do you say "how to" in Japanese?

Add かた (方) to the ます-stem of a verb: 読みかた (how to read), つかいかた (how to use). It works like a noun, so you can say 〜をおしえてください.

What about する verbs?

Use しかた. For a する verb with a noun, put の between them: べんきょうのしかた (how to study).
